Scoring system

The winner is the runner who gets the highest score in the event.

Your score depends on:

1) How far you go.

2) How fast you go.

The runner who reaches gokyo very fast will get less points than the runner who reaches Renjo Pass at a slower pace.

The score is calculated as follows:

1) The runner who has reached the finishing point (Namche Bazaar) gets the score calculated by the following formula: 5000 points minus the time spent on the distance in minutes.

Example: a runner has finished the whole route within 1000 minutes. He gets 5000 – 1000 = 4000 points.

2) The runner who hasn’t reached the finishing point, but reached any of the intermediate points, gets the score calculated by the formula: 5000 minus the time on the distance minus penalty. The penalty is fixed for every intermediate point and measured in minutes.

Detailed calculation of a penalty: triple time from the intermediate point to the finishing point at a slow pace.

Penalty evaluation:

Thame-Namche: time – 180 minutes, penalty – 540 points

Marlung-Namche: time – 300 minutes, penalty: 900 points

Renjo Pass – Namche: time –  450 minutes, penalty: 1350 points

Gokyo – Renjo Pass – Namche: time – 700 minutes, penalty: 2100 points

Dole – Renjo Pass – Namche: 1100 minutes, penalty: 3000 points

Examples:

1) A runner has reached Dole within 4 hours (240 minutes). The score is: 5000 – 240 – 3000 = 1760 points.

2) A runner has reached Gokyo within 9 hours (540 minutes). The score is: 5000 – 540 – 2100 = 2360 points

3) A runner has reached Renjo Pass within 12 hours (710 minutes). The score is: 5000 – 720 – 1350 = 2930 points

4) A runner has reached Marlung within 15 hours (900 minutes). The score is: 5000 – 900 – 900 = 3200 points

5) A runner has reached Thame within 17 hours (1020 minutes). The score is: 5000 – 1020 – 540 = 3440 points

6) A runner has reached Namche within 20 hours (1200 minutes). The score is: 5000 – 0- 1200 = 3800 points

The score system is flexible and allows you to get improvements in 3 different ways:

1) Endurance (how far you go). This year you can make it to Dole or Gokyo, and the next year it’s already Renjo Pass or Marlung.

2) Speed (how fast you go). Even if you have reached the finishing point in 17 hours, next year you can manage it in 16 or 15 hours – which is a great achievment.

3) Regularity (how regular you go). With a separate rating of accumulating score you will be able to outstrip those participants, who get to the finishing point once in 5 years, if you regularily reach Gokyo every year.
